Salmon Camp 2023 was a joint program between the Quillayute Valley School District and the Pacific Coast Salmon Coalition, who received a Washington state grant from the Department of Recreation and Conservation called “No Child Left Inside”.
Salmon Camp invited 6th and 7th graders who qualified for summer school due to academic needs. The focus was on engaging underserved youth in environmental stewardship through salmon education and outdoor experiences.
The educators that were chosen to staff Salmon Camp are all dedicated to kids! They each brought their professional knowledge, backgrounds, and engaging content styles to the learning environment. They were asked to share why they entered their field, and their career path. We wanted our kids to see new pathways to college, trade school, and career readiness, as well as learning new STEAM lessons in a fun outdoor environment.
The stakeholders and staff that participated were: Pacific Coast Salmon Coalition, Quillayute Valley School District, Wild Salmon Center, Trout Unlimited, Olympic National Park, Bogachiel Hatchery, NW Indian Fisheries Commision, Eagle Creek Ranch, Drums and Dreams, Quileute Natural Resources, Clallam County Conservation Office. Kids, families, and the community are still talking about the fantastic experiences of this year’s Salmon Camp 2023!
