After the cancelation of in-person school in the spring of 2020, Mid-Columbia Fisheries provided online salmon conservation information for local schools that normally have a salmon unit that includes rearing salmon in the classroom and one or more field trips to focused on understanding and caring for local watersheds and fish habitat.
To also provide HANDS-ON opportunities, we partnered with two local school districts and another non-profit on a “Brown Bag Science” education series. Paired with summer lunch programs, a “grab and go” science packet was distributed weekly.
Each packet included a booklet with conservation science activities for children and families, and a scientific tool. The program (available in English and Spanish) helped participants explore local watersheds, ocean connections, habitat, and salmon lifecycle.
