LCFEG is implementing a design and restoration LTPBR project on Mason Creek, a tributary of the East Fork Lewis River in Clark County, drawing on lessons from the Asotin Creek and Bridge Creek IMWs.
To date, we have restored 1.1 miles of the planned 2.5 miles of aquatic habitat and riparian corridor, and have installed 165 of the 250 planned instream habitat structures (Post Assisted Log Structures and Beaver Dam Analogs).
The project also includes planting 27,000 native riparian plants. This work is made possible through $272,000 from the Salmon Recovery Funding Board (SRFB), $101,000 from WSCC SRF and RPPP programs, and $40,000 from the Rose Foundation. Together, these investments support efforts to improve habitat complexity, floodplain connectivity, riparian function, groundwater recharge, channel stability, and wood retention.
The restoration is designed to benefit Fall Chinook, Winter and Summer Steelhead, Coho, and Chum, with additional gains for Pacific Lamprey, Cutthroat Trout, and other native species. Although Mason Creek is among the region’s most productive salmon tributaries, it often runs dry in summer, causing fish strandings. The project’s design emphasizes riparian planting and instream structures that slow flows, retain water, and restore natural processes, with the long-term goal of re-establishing perennial flow.
