Seeds to Salmon (S2S) is an outdoor learning initiative that connects high school and middle school students to the interdependence of salmon and healthy watersheds through hands-on plant propagation and restoration activities.

In 2024–25, LCFEG developed an Open Resource Curriculum designed for use statewide and piloted it with local teachers through two curriculum workshops. Three Vancouver School District high schools—Hudson’s Bay, Fort Vancouver, and CASEE—completed the program this year.

The curriculum offers seasonal, experiential lessons that link native plants to salmon survival while introducing students to natural resource careers. New program updates included expanded winter and summer content, engaging presentations, and skill-building activities.

Across six weeks in both fall and spring, LCFEG staff taught classes at each school, reaching approximately 150 students. In fall, students collected and potted seeds from native species; in spring, they transplanted seedlings, prepared plants for school sales, and learned directly from environmental professionals.

Students also joined field trips to salmon restoration sites, planting native vegetation at Baz Park in Camas and helping construct beaver dam analogs at Harry Gardner Park on Earth Day.

This project was funded by $68,000 from DNR’s Urban & Community Forestry Program and supported by $25,000 from WDFW–RFEG funding.
