For over a decade, Sound Salmon Solutions staff has led field trips focused on the water quality of Jones Creek for all 5th grade classes in the Marysville School District – that’s typically around 35 classes per year! During these field trips, students and their chaperones participate in chemical water quality testing and bioassessments with macroinvertebrates.
Due to the health crisis and the switch to virtual learning, the district asked us to create a robust virtual adaptation of our field lessons in order to continue providing these meaningful experiences for their students during the spring of 2020. The district asked us to create virtual lessons that could be utilized by students at home no matter whether they were supported by a parent or working alone, that would also be easy for teachers to implement.
The final product included a series of virtual field trip videos, live zoom sessions for students, resources for further exploration, and optional extension lessons for teachers.
